Summer is undoubtedly a chance to spend as much time as possible outdoors, and as a result, during this season design priorities usually consist of patios, balconies, and decks. After all (at least here in Minnesota), we only get this weather for a few months, so we tend to soak it up. Yet, summer’s inspiration doesn’t need to end at the threshold to the indoors. In fact, this season is bursting with inspiration from the outdoors, and there are limitless ways to incorporate nature’s designs into your own interior spaces.
For inspiration on the endless possibilities that await when we bring the outdoors in, read ahead - with a few strategic elements incorporated into your space, the transition from humid-heavy afternoons to crisp and cool AC-filled interiors will feel effortless.
Linen & Wool Materials
There are many types of textiles on the market that can be used in a variety of decor pieces. Yet, it is increasingly apparent that when we turn to natural materials like linen and wool, the effect is unmatched. They help us forge a connection to our spaces and with natural elements in play, our bodies naturally relax as a result. Plus, they have texture at the core of their designs, which means that whether we use them as bedding, a casual throw, or a few decorative pillows, they instantly create visual interest and bring the surrounding space to life.
Wood Accents
Wood is found in abundance in nature, so it’s no wonder that when we incorporate it into our designs, it provides an infusion of warmth that is hard to replicate. Especially in spaces that have a more industrial aesthetic all around, wood can help to soften the sleeker edges in modern design and provide a feeling of peace and tranquility that helps us feel connected to the outdoors. Tables, chairs, tchotchkes, shelves, and more are all simple, yet impactful, ways to weave wood into your design, and as long as you don’t overdo it with floor-to-ceiling paneling and wood-only furniture, it will feel balanced and beautiful.
Natural Shapes & Textures
When we consider the shapes and textures of the pieces that surround us on a daily basis, oftentimes they can feel too processed and streamlined. Taking a cue from the outdoor environment, however, we know that if we actively mix in furniture, cabinetry, countertops, and decor that have a wide array of shapes and textures that bring to mind scenes of nature, our spaces are made so much more full and interesting by effect. Pairing a sleek and streamlined light fixture with a coffee table that evokes a stone in a stream or a chair that mimics the movement of water immediately transforms a space from cold and calculated to natural and intuitive. Pieces that favor rounded edges, asymmetry, and heavy texture are critical to making our homes feel inviting and lived-in.
What has inspired you this summer? Have you pulled new and interesting pieces into your existing design? Have you found that it’s given your space a refreshing dose of life? The effect of nature is incredible, and if we can bottle it up - even momentarily - it can have a lasting impact on our day to day lives from summer to winter and beyond.
