Smart Design Where it Matters Most
In today’s world, we tend to desire smaller, simpler and more casual living, which means our living spaces must serve many functions. Whether used for reading, writing, working, lounging, comfy movie nights, or sleep, smart design is a must. And with a streak of creativity, it is definitely possible to use each and every square inch in an intentional and functional way.
Of course, while this type of design is fairly commonplace in living rooms, kitchens, and dining spaces, it’s not quite as prevalent in the bedroom. In fact, some experts believe the bedroom shouldn’t be used for anything but sleep. We disagree.
Gone are the days of opulent boudoirs and bedrooms dismissed until bedtime. Instead, a new trend of multipurpose bedrooms has been ushered in – and it’s one that we wholly support. When designed with elegance and the ability to easily transform into a peaceful retreat, they can be simply stunning.
If casual living is your goal, or you’d like to simply make more use out of your bedroom square footage, read on for inspiration. We’ve gathered together some of the most stunning designs out there that make us want to revamp our own bedrooms - stat.
Nightstand & Desk Combos
The simplest multipurpose solution in a bedroom is to swap out a nightstand for a desk. As long as the desk itself isn’t too tall for the scale of the bed frame, it retains the same function, but elevates it to an office space as well. With ample surface area to set down your nighttime essentials (glasses, books, water, etc.), plus plenty of room to fit a laptop and notepad, it’s the ideal way to make use of your bedroom design. Just be sure to keep your desk as free of clutter as possible. While in a dedicated office, daily workplace mess is par for the course, you’ll want to keep this area minimal in order to retain the relaxation aesthetic of the overall bedroom.
Vanity & Workspace Duos
Another favorite bedroom combination of ours is the desk and vanity duo. With a simple addition of a large mirror, a dedicated work area immediately transforms into a convenient vanity (and as a bonus, that mirror helps to make the room feel larger by reflecting light). Especially if you can tuck away your makeup and toiletries into drawers or stylish baskets, this multipurpose corner will cater to all of your needs, be it to draft your next proposal or to get ready for an evening out.
Built-In Beauties
If a free-standing desk isn’t your style, consider ways to make use of bedroom essentials already in play. A built-in closet, for instance, can include a small corner workspace in a beautiful way - not only does it make great use of space, but it also adds a pop of visual interest on an otherwise monochromatic wall. Have a TV wall in your bedroom instead? Try pairing that media storage with a connecting desk or library/book storage. A space dedicated to entertainment is usually used only for that, so altering its function to include a workspace is both seamless and easy to accomplish.
Whether you’re looking to downsize to a smaller home, or you simply don’t need an entire room dedicated to your office needs, consider adding multipurpose furniture to your bedroom space. With a bit of innovation and design know-how, your desk will feel right at home and will be ready for whatever you need it for - workplace tasks, nighttime storage, and everything in between.
